About Us

Paul Kampas

Visual designer and discoverer...

I started out my career as a computer systems guy (Cornell) and ended up as an organizational systems guy, which turned out to be more fun and interesting (what's more intriguing than the human condition? ;-)

I have authored or co-authored a number of books and articles (one in Harvard Business Review) that you can check out in the Cognitive Frameworks section. Perhaps my most distinctive competence is what I call "visual-integrative thinking." Everything is part of a system, though many leaders and professionals, in my experience, struggle to envision how the pieces connect and inter-operate. I help them do that through the use of visual cognitive frameworks. For example, I developed a visual language and framework for understanding and designing organizations as whole systems, including culture, learning, leadership, processes, structure, resource allocation, and more (see more in Mastering Organizational Architecture). I would also help clients envision the structure and segments of their markets in frameworks I call "market landscapes" (see more in Envisioning Business).

I am mostly retired now, but still apply visual-integrative thinking in a program I give in senior centers called Navigating the Circle of Life. It's about how, as you age, to turn losses into gains to keep life interesting and full. I also have time now to explore more of the world of visual and decorative arts, making stained glass and helping my friends with interior design, which requires lots of visual-spatial reasoning. I also do photography, spending many hours playing in Photoshop, and do graphic design (mostly drawing classic cars and interesting architecture).
